Present Memorial Location — 5th Ave. & A St.

In 1999 the process of moving the Memorial to a different location, from its original Airport Heights location was started. It took a few years of fund raising and planning but in 2003 the Memorial was dedicated in the new location at 5th Ave and A St. in Anchorage. It is located next to Anchorage Fire Department Station 1.  (Construction photos are available on this web site under the “media” tab.)

During the process of moving the Memorial the committee tasked with oversight and management of the Memorial was reformed. It was decided at this point that the committee would be made up of a representative of the Alaska Fire Chiefs Association, the Alaska State Firefighters Association, the Anchorage Fire Department, and the State Fire Marshals Office.

That original committee included:

  • Mark Barker, AFCA
  • Jeff Bayless, ASFA
  • Casey Johnson, AFD
  • Steve Schreck, State Fire Marshal Office

As of this date (2015) the committee is made up of:

  • Mark Barker, AFCA
  • Steve Schreck, State Fire Marshal Office
  • Pat O’Shea, AFD
  • Rocky Ansell, ASFA

Early History and Original Memorial Site

The Alaska Fallen Firefighter Memorial was originally envisioned in the late 1980’s by then State Fire Marshal Sam Neal. Over a number of years of fund raising, in 1995 the goal of a Memorial to Alaska’s Fallen Firefighters was realized; the Memorial was constructed and that year, with the ASFA/AFCA Fire Conference in Anchorage, the Memorial was dedicated.

The dedication included presentations by the following:

  • State Fire Marshal Sam Neal
  • Chaplin Bert McQueen
  • US Air Force Band of the Pacific
  • Ed McCormick, Alliance of Fire & Emergency Associations
  • Joe Albrecht, Anchorage Fire Department.

The original Memorial Committee was made up of:

  • Mona Biggs, Anchorage Fire Department
  • Tom Take, State of Alaska
  • Mark Barker, Fire Service Training
  • Jim Kenshalo, Anchorage Fire Department.

This original Memorial was located on Airport Heights Blvd., in Anchorage; near AFD Station 3 and the State of Alaska Fire Training Center. It was constructed under a partnership with the State of Alaska Fire Service Training Office, the Anchorage Fire Department Training Division, and the State of Alaska Job Corps Training Office. Kulis Air Guard also contributed to this original Memorial in the original location.
